Obedience can also be bondage when it proceeds from totalitarianism. This is when people obey out of duress, constraint, repression and oppression and there are people and systems out there which we all know about who fall into that category. How much better is it to model the servant heart of Jesus who once again obeyed all the way to the Cross. I want my children and people operating in my context to obey because they want to and not because they have to. This becomes the difference between force and authority. Force is obviously oppressive while authority uses persuasion. It assumes the best and not the worse and always puts forward options and choices. Brain dead people use force to get their way but truly intelligent people will exercise whatever “choice” tool they can find in order to win a person to the truth. Truth can only march on when we give people the power to lay all possible solutions in front of them and they in turn make a decision of their will to choose the best way. As a parting thought – Solomon declares that we need to hold on to instruction coming from righteous sources and to reject the advice of the wicked (Proverbs 4:13-15) which once again speaks of using our power of choice to receive illumination from above. While living in Washington DC many years ago, I discovered that many people in the media were total atheists, and I made it a point to make sure from that point on to listen to people I knew were objective and not biased about things righteous. Those who live in the truth will know what the substance of truth is about. Let’s make the right choice and reject the lies while following after the truth found in the pure, sweet life of Jesus.
