"Obedient Blessings See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse—the blessing if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today (Deuteronomy 11:26, 27). Scripture: Deuteronomy 11:26-32 Song: “Sweet Peace, the Gift of God’s Love” At the medical office where I work, I opened the receptionist window to help a patient. “Where’s the doctor? I’ve been waiting for 45 minutes. I need to be somewhere in an hour,” she yelled in my face. I was caught off guard as her anger flared. My heart pounded. I couldn’t yell back, or I’d lose my job. What’s the professional response to this? More importantly, how would God want me to respond? I knew I could reply with love . . . but how would that look? Her side: this lady clearly felt her needs weren’t being met. My side: I felt verbally attacked for something over which I had no control. Romans 12:18 says, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” God’s command to love one another was so applicable here. I could respond from a heart of love for hurting, broken people or yell back, ramping up the hatred in an already charged situation. How difficult it is sometimes to calm down and make the right choice. When I’ve chosen to love, forgive, and try to understand another’s feelings, I’ve always felt better. As it says in Proverbs 14:30, “A heart at peace gives life to the body.” What a blessing for simply obeying His Word! Thank You, Lord, for helping me remain calm when others are angry—and for blessing me with peace when I daily choose to obey You. Through Christ, amen."
