Obituary- My grandfather R. Merle Stauffer, MD Dr. R. Merle Stauffer, longtime Champaign resident, died at the age of 85 on Sunday, October 12, 2014. He was born in Urbana, IL, to Dr. Russell S. and Pearl (Bancroft) Stauffer. He graduated from University High School, and the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Medicine (1953) and a Doctor of Medicine (1955). He completed residency at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. He served two years in the U.S. Army in Ansbach, Germany, and then went into General Practice in Paxton, IL. He completed a residency in anesthesia at Indiana University, Indianapolis, IN. He joined Carle Clinic, Urbana, in 1963, and remained there until his retirement in 1986. He received a fellowship in anesthesiology and board certification from the American Board of Anesthesiology. He was elected President of the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc., for the year 1975-1976. After he retired, he continued pursuing many interests, including organizing a local singles group, photography, nature studies, attending farmers’ markets, and ballroom dancing. He was an avid patron of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou Radebaugh of Stow, OH. He is survived by his children: Sherrill Hooke, Vancouver, WA; Russell S. Stauffer II, Rockford, IL; Marion Momaly, Rockford, IL; and Julie Moore, Irvine, CA. He has four grandchildren.
