Object Name Waistcoat Catalog Number 1948.12.3 Date ca.1795 Material(s) Linen; silk; wool Description This single breasted man’s waistcoat is made from woven gold silk front panels with very fine horizontal brown pinstripes. It is lined with homespun cotton and backed with dark brown (yellow?) wool. The backing appears to be a replacement for a fine silk backing. Remnants of original backing are visible near side seems. It has a two inch standing tab collar lined with white linen woven in a blue check pattern. The collar, front panels, pockets, and bottom edge are trimmed with gold silk tape which is pinstriped with brown in the following pattern: heavy brown line, two thin lines, two thin lines, heavy brown line. There are twelve buttonholes, six missing buttons. The buttons may be bone and are covered in brown, burgundy, and white thread in a central cross pattern. The waistcoat has welt pockets. Notes This waistcoat may have been remade from a 1770s waistcoat. According to the donor, this is one of three vests ”owned by Mrs. Waller’s great-grandfather Peers, who was Aid-de-Camp of Gen. Washington.” Valentine Peers entered the Revolutionary Army of VA in 1776. He was Brigade Major to General George Weedon of the Continental Army who was under the Command of General George Washington, in the Campaign of 1777-78. In 1803 Peers moved to the area that is now Nicholas County, Ky.
