Oboist Michael Cohen is a musician in the United States Army, currently assigned to the 323d Army Band, “Fort Sam’s Own.” He has performed with the Virginia, San Antonio, Mid-Texas, Owensboro (KY), and Terre Haute Symphony Orchestras, as well as the West Point Band at the United States Military Academy, and under the batons of Robert Spano, Joseph Silverstein, and Xian Zhang. In January 2000, Michael was the principal oboist of the National Festival Orchestra under Maestro Lukas Foss for a performance of Beethoven’s Third Symphony at Carnegie Hall. As a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Michael was an active performer with MusiCorps, Civic’s chamber music program, and brought music to the students of Chicago’s public colleges and high schools. An avid chamber musician, Michael was a fellow at the Sarasota Music Festival and will be participating in his second season with Mozart Festival Texas this August. Michael holds a Master’s Degree from Indiana University and a Bachelor’s Degree from The Boston Conservatory. His principal teachers include Linda Strommen, Laura Ahlbeck, and Grover Schiltz. Michael enjoys golfing, reading about economics, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs.
