Observer takes top award in state newspaper contest A State Line Observer Article Wednesday, October 8, 2014 Morenci, Michigan & Fayette, Ohio statelineobserver The State Line Observer was awarded Newspaper of the Year among the state’s smallest weekly papers in the annual Michigan Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. This marks the 13th year out of the last 16 that the Observer has taken the top honor. “I thought last year would have been the end of the line for that award,” said publisher David Green. “Changes in newspaper circulation have moved additional papers into the smallest class. We’re now competing against papers with more resources including Saline, Chelsea and Tecumseh.” The Newspaper of the Year award is based on the total points earned in the contest, and the Observer’s points came from awards in only six categories. The Observer earned first place in Editorial Page, Sports Coverage, Sports Feature Story about bass fishing coach Seth Borton, and Sports Columns for Rich Foley’s NASCAR racing articles. A second-place award was given in News Photo for a field fire and a third-place award was given in Editorial Writing. Honorable mention was given for a Photo Page about Stair Public Library’s summer reading program and for David Green’s By the Way column. Michigan Press Association director Michael McLaren said that the number of contest entries increased in the 2014 contest, and said this is good for both journalists and readers. “The increased competition inspires all journalists to produce better work, which in turn, nurtures stronger communities,” he said. The Observer competes among newspapers with circulations less than 4,000. Newspaper of the Year awards will be presented at the Michigan Press Association’s annual convention in January. ■ Subscribe to the Award Winning Newspaper State Line Observer by visiting the link below; statelineobserver/images/stories/File/mailinsubform.pdf
