Observing that full-time weightlifting coaches are better at coaching weightlifting than most CrossFit coaches is the same as observing that full-time weightlifters clean and jerk more than most CrossFit athletes. These statements are obvious and barely deserves the effort needed to pronounce them. Specialists outperform generalists in their specialty. Or theyre not specialists. But if you want to be fit you have to do much more than clean and jerk and snatch, much as one may wish otherwise. Unless you have the resources to hire a specialty coach in every aspect of fitness, youre going to need a generalist. And even as a pro competitive exerciser with multiple specialist coaches, youll probably want a generalist to organize all the moving parts. Second, even top weightlifting coaches and weightlifters disagree on how to coach the lifts. So your weightlifting coach may not like the Shrug cue, but that doesnt mean its garbage. There are others who do (Waxman, Klokov etc). As Colin Burns said of the Russians, There are some differences in which they reach the end result, but they still say jump, and they still teach the shrug. source: jtsstrength/articles/2013/12/23/11-lessons-russians/ Lastly, theres a big difference between cues (what coaches say), and technique (what athletes do). A coach may not mention the shrug, and thats fine, but his athletes probably still shrug.
