Occasioned by the burning of huge numbers of tally sticks from the Exchequer. National debts and credits were mainly recorded as notches on wooden sticks right up to the end of the 18th century, and after an act of Parliament abolished the practice, it was decided to burn the archive. A huge loss for economic historians - itd be like destroying all of Americas digital financial records, and trying to reconstruct how things were from bills and coins. Michael Jaskie
