Oct 01 2014 : The Times of India (Chennai) AAI to train its officers in new landing system Chennai: TIMES NEWS NETWORK Airports Authority of India (AAI) will soon send a team of officers abroad for training in the procedures required for landing planes at Chennai airport using a satellite-based system, GroundBased Augmentation System (GBAS). The airport is banking on the technology , which is being installed for the first time in the country , to allow planes to land on the secondary runway which does not have space to install the conventional instrument landing system. “We installed the equipment a week ago. It includes GPS antennas, GPS reference receiver, transmitters and receivers. Software fine tuning is needed because of interference from the ionosphere.AAI will approach the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for final certification and commissioning after customising it for use here,“ said Deepak Shastri, regional executive director, southern region, AAI. The system works using GPS signals from satellites used by mobile phones. As planes require more precise signals for safety , the groundbased equipment will boost the signals and make it more accurate for the planes to home in on a runway for landing. “We will soon have to do flight trials using a test plane owned by AAI. Aircraft too should have compatible receivers on board to use GBAS signals. All commercial airliners manufactured after 2010 have GBAS receivers onboard,“ said George D Silva, joint general manager, CNS, AAI. Officials would be travelling to the US to get trained with Honeywell which has installed GBAS. “The usage procedures need to be designed next. We are planning to commission the system in April next year,“ said Shastri. He said the satellite-based landing system would help the airport to improve its aircraft handling capacity . “The airport handles 45 to 50 aircraft an hour during peak hours. This can be increased to 60 to 70 planes an hour when GBAS is commissioned,“ he added.
