October 13, 2014 “Are You Looking In The Wrong Mirror?” I heard a disturbing report about something that is happening on a grand scale among young people, especially girls, in this country. They are taking pictures of themselves, posting the pictures on social media sites, and asking for feedback on whether the viewers think they are “ugly.” One thirteen year old girl posted a photo and received over twelve thousand hits commenting on her looks… most of them harshly critical and negative. These young people are receiving cruel and vitriolic feedback at an emotionally vulnerable age in life… from people who are foolish and unconcerned with the consequences of their comments. This practice is dangerous on so many levels, but these kids are looking in the wrong mirror! Many Christians are looking to the society and the world around them for validation. They are seeking affirmation and looking for acceptance through secular means. In the words of a popular song, they are “Looking for love in all the wrong places!” We should be looking into the “mirror of the Word” to see who we are… instead of the world’s mirror. When we look at ourselves through the world’s mirror, we are shown all of our flaws, failures, and foibles. The Bible calls Satan, “the accuser” and he is constantly trying to deceive us and make us believe that God does not really love us and thinks we are hideous and ugly. But, Gods mirror tells us that we are beautiful in God’s eyes because of Jesus, our Savior. Because of what Jesus has done for us in His death and resurrection, we can look into the mirror and see ourselves without spot or blemish. Jesus has made us clean. Jesus has made us acceptable and qualified for all the promises in God’s Word. On a wooden cross outside Jerusalem, He sacrificed Himself in order to get rid of anything that would mar our complexion in the sight of God. Through faith in Jesus, we are told that God has forgiven us. We are clean. When God sees us, He sees us “in Jesus.” Because of Gods saving love, we are beautiful in His eyes! How do you see yourself? Are you looking in the wrong mirror? Michael Gordon
