October 1977, Ann Arbor. I was in a computer store called Newman Computer Exchange when the first shipment of Commodore PETs came through the door (the PET was released a couple of months before the Apple II). I had worked as a computer salesman at the beginning of that summer, so I had familiarity with similar PCs, but this was an integrated unit with a decent BASIC (by Microsoft), 8 kilobytes of memory, and a built-in cassette deck. The flat, calculator-style keyboard wasnt great, but it served its purpose. It came with a couple of BASIC games, including a fun one called Lunar Lander that used the PETs built-in graphics character set. Litle did I know how closely my life would be intertwined with Commodore for the next 15 years or so...
