October 2013 PRAYER FOCUS For increased sensitivity and response to hunger and injustice in our world •Pray that believers will have an increased sense of God’s desire to care for the hungry and the vulnerable—widows, orphans, the sick and the poor. •Pray that we would have greater courage to meet the needs of those we encounter who are most in need, as God enables us. •Pray that more believers will be willing to do their part to bring about justice and relief for all who are oppressed and defenseless. •Pray that God will intervene in regions facing debilitating droughts and famines, and make a way for sufficient food and water to reach those who need it most. •Pray for hearts of increased gratitude to God for His provision, protection and deliverance in our lives. October Theme Scriptures Isaiah 58:6-12 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? 8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. 9 Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, 10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. 11 The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. 12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings. Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Psalm 146:5-10 5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. 6 He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever.7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free,8 the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. 9 The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. 10 The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord. Psalm 9:7-18 7 The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. 8 He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity.9 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.10 Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.11 Sing the praises of the Lord, enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations what he has done.12 For he who avenges blood remembers; he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.13 Lord, see how my enemies persecute me! Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death,14 that I may declare your praises in the gates of Daughter Zion, and there rejoice in your salvation.15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug; their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.16 The Lord is known by his acts of justice; the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.17 The wicked go down to the realm of the dead, all the nations that forget God.18 But God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish. Psalm 10:14 But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. Psalm 50:23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me, and to the blameless I will show my salvation.
