October 23, 1983 is a sad date that most Americans but for US Marines around the world it is a day of remembrance. On this day, 30 years ago, 241 Marines, Sailors and other Americans we killed in their sleep in Beirut, Lebanon. Many consider this attack as the start of the current war on terrorism, not 9-11. I am included in this group. I was in the Marine Corps on this date in 1983 and for 30 years this date has, sadly, been special to me. 241 died that day, but all 190,000 Marines in the Corps at that time were hurt in one way or another. None of us will ever forget and neither should the rest of America.
