October 23rd Jesus said “But I warn you--unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!” Matthew 5:20. This is a very sobering statement and one that truly makes me more aware of how I am treating others. It takes no effort and costs me nothing to be kind to those I enjoy being with, but what about those people who aggravate and frustrate me, do I have a responsibility to be kind to them as well? Any student of the Bible knows that God’s ways are completely inverted to our natural ways of doing things, i.e. But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, Luke 6:27. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21. This can be a difficult thing to comprehend in our natural way of looking at this subject; however I see that this is much easier than I first thought. The Bible says that “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. Also, I am more than a conqueror over all these adversities that come against me as long as I rely on Christ and not on myself (see Romans 8:37). Was it within Jesus’ power to stop the horror that was happening to Him? Absolutely, “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” Matthew 26:53. It is my desire to be strong enough in the spirit to not only withstand the attacks that occur in life, but too respond in a loving way. “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18
