October Clinic Report! Ney Grant flew his daughter, Belyn (a Cal Poly San Louis Obispo senior), Debbie Marino, Bob Haining & me. Todd Makiyama flew his wife, Theresa, & a fellow dentist, Charlie Arita. Doug Wirzberger flew Clair de Crescenzo (a 2nd year U.C. Davis med student), Mariana Locke & Pam Fallo. Joel flew Joe Zachwieja & Gwen Douglass. Bryan Krey, one of our new pilots & an oral surgeon, flew Phil Lancaster. A very nice flight down with minimal hassle at Tijuana. Justin Sherrill drove his classmate, Justin Tsang, & Joes daughter, Hannah, arriving at the hotel at 10:30 Friday night. Several went for street tacos & the remainder ate the buffet at the hotel for $11.00. Good food, but the clam chowder was a loss. Saturday, the four dentists along with the two Justins plus Eduardo started like gang busters, pulling teeth right & left. They suddenly discovered that the wall voltage was 150 volts, which is harmful to the equipment. Joel & Doug sprang into action to start the generator which we used previously to provide power. A quick trip to town was done to buy starter fluid & the generator was up & running. The Los Pinos workers discovered that the lines from the transformer were corroded and after cleaning them, normal voltage was restored to the clinic. Todd will give a report on numbers of patients treated by the dentists. Joe Zachwieja will report on the eye exams & glasses ordered and delivered. Bob Haining, Mariana and Clair saw 112 patients, with Pam Fallo performing nursing functions (blood pressure, weight, temps & blood sugars). It took three hours to count meds and place them in packets, done by Belyn, Clair & me. Flor came to clinic & her condition is unchanged. Arely Rodriquez has lost weight & was sent for a dental exam; three molars were extracted and she has three cavities to be filled later. Hopefully, the diseased molars were the cause of her weight loss & now that they have been removed, she will gain weight. Gwen was her usual cheerful self entertaining the little ones. Debbie, as usual, worked nonstop helping everyone. Saturday night, we converged on Jardines & and by the time we were served and ate our meals, almost three hours had elapsed. Samuel found an airstrip 24 miles from our clinic, so he & Joel visited the owner and were given permission to land and park our planes. Apparently there is security there, so if we have need, we have a great place to land and store our planes. After dinner on Saturday night, Todd & Justin returned to clinic to improve the orthodontist chairs which lack water, suction, etc. While working there, they operated the autoclave which caught fire; hopefully it can be repaired. After breakfast Sunday morning, we departed & had headwinds all the way home. Sr. Bilito
