October is the month when we look forward to seeing trees in their fall colors. Visitors to Eisenhower National Historic Site often comment and say “wow†about the sugar maple that stands in the front yard of the Eisenhower Home. Every autumn it gives off a spectacular display of red and yellow foliage. The installation of this tree, along with several others, was made possible by a generous gift from the Eisenhower’s friend Nelson A. Rockefeller. According to an oral history with Chief Walter West, who was involved with the landscaping at the farm, this maple tree was selected from a nearby woodlot. It was moved to its present location during the initial landscaping of the home during 1954-55. These photos were taken for the site this month by seasonal ranger Beth Atkins.
