Odd how a present day technology is illegal to operate while motoring though its original concept was for use in automobiles to communicate while in transit. While a teenager I had a small after school job at a local two-way radio shop installing mobile telephones. I drilled countless holes in the rooftops and dash assemblies of automobiles to fulfill sales for trendy customers for 80s era mobile telephones (Regency RFH252B pictured). Customers subscribed with RCC for MTS which was around $15 a month and were issued a 3 or 4 digit cap code. An operator assisted for outgoing calls. Incoming calls were announced by operator (i.e. Washington calling 1007. 1007 this is Washington. Are you available?) If the subscriber failed to acknowledge, the operator would transmit a page which unmuted the receivers audio and switched on a blinking Call lamp. A page could also activate a radio pager or sound the vehicles horn for 2-3 seconds. (Note: Image 1 are IMTS or Improved Mobile Telephone Service duplex systems).
