Odd subject - but interesting! Why do horses sniff one anothers poo? Disgusting habit? Well we might think so but its an essential way of learning information about those around them through investigating the pheromones in the faeces (as well as discovering what plants the horse has been eating - very important for young equines to learn). Learning by smelling faeces avoids having to get up close and personal to the individual whose poo it is, so less threatening as no personal space invasion. As people are increasing turnout with the better weather its worth remembering this - allow horses at least 1-2 days of sniffing fresh faeces of any new companion before spending a day or two introducing over a high fence - it will save you many injuries and set the horses up for better relationships. Odd but true!!
