After trying Rome Total War 2 when it first was released, I left it alone in disgust. Now after a lot of patches its called the Emperor edition and I find it has improved a lot. The battle AI is quite sneeky and makes a good opponent. Im still not sure if its worth fighting the battles, though, as I am still getting better results from auto-resolve sometimes. The Mr Blobby effect can be managed by an order to attack in formation though I dont think that should be necessary. Italian spearmen stand up to Hastati swordsmen for quite a long time - a totally different result from Medieval Total War 2, though maybe Ive had the wrong match-ups, but even when the spearmen are hit in the rear they still take a long time to rout. The naval battles are going to take a lot of practice, you really have to know the characteristics of the units and how best to use them to have a chance.
