Of #KCCA and Street Vendors _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With an impoverished Urban Population, a dream city is nothing but a dream, because no city can be more successful than its inhabitants. A citys growth rate is a direct reflection of (and greatly relies on) the economic growth of its inhabitants. Not some of its inhabitants but all of its inhabitants. In my 2006 research entitled The Impact Of Urban Poverty On The Implementation Of Urban Planning Policies, I discovered that the growth of any city must kick off with the prosperity of it dwellers, since it is the people who make the cities, not the other way round. Prior to the Industrial Revolution and just after the onset of the Industrial Revolution, urban areas in Europe were squalid and devoid of the basic sanitary amenites. However, when the Industrial Revolution took root and economic benefits arose therefrom, European cities took root as well. We must come up with Vendor friendly policies like pedestrian precincts and vendors holidays. A pedestrian precinct is a road or section of a road specifically gazetted for pedestrians. This can be permanent or temporary, falling on specific days of the week. Such precincts would be very ideal places for street vendors to freely interact with pedestrians and sell their merchandise in a closely monitored and regulated environment. Vendors Holidays on the other hand, refer to specific days of the week when Vendors would be allowed to access certain parts of the city and sell their merchandise. For example, it can be said that every Wednesday and Friday, vendors can access Ben Kiwanuka street, Luwum Street, Market Street and several other streets in down town Kampala. That way, youd have regulated street vending and attained an organised city, without depriving anyone of a livelihood CONCLUSION- You must start by improving the people, especially financially, or keep moving in circles!
