Of all the dishonest games we play in our lives and relationships, the most self-defeating and destructive are those we play with our selves. We may delude ourselves in many ways, such as refusing to see our options and avoiding our responsibilities. We may convince ourselves that we are the victims of other peoples choices or mistakes. We may deceive ourselves about the real consequences of our actions. Lying to ourselves only harms our self-trust, self-respect, and self-love. Denying our true thoughts and feelings is a way of disowning ourselves, of disconnecting our outer selves from our inner truth. In order to be honest with others, we must be honest with ourselves. As soon as we open the door to greater self-awareness and honesty, we can begin enjoying greater self-love, peace of mind, and loving relationships with others.
