Of the nearly 20 million Americans who attend college each year, - TopicsExpress

Of the nearly 20 million Americans who attend college each year, about 12 million borrow, according to the Almanac of Higher Education. Estimates show that the average four-year graduate accumulates $26,000 to $29,000 in loans, and some leave college with six figures worth of debt. There are about 65 Million people that receive welfare benefits, food stamps, or unemployment (19% of which are in respective programs for over 5 years). It costs around $130 Billion a year. There are more than THREE TIMES the amount of people receiving government assistance than there are going to college. Yet, the shams that are Colleges and Universities are spending time and resources lobbying the government for new football stadiums, fancy new buildings, and various other capital improvement projects. How about we invest in human capital? Would that be too much to ask? Ask for $50 Million to give your students a break on tuition so they can become a productive member of society without having to dig themselves out of a debt hole first. When it takes you a third of your career to pay off that piece of paper, what kind of attitude are you going to have about college when you have children? Its bad enough that the jobs they were promised are nowhere to be found now that theyre out of school... We can pay for them now OR pay for them later when they become a benefit program statistic. Your choice... /rant
