Of what are you certain? #eternallife 1 John 5:13 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.” We live in a world so full of uncertainties, that we often spend great percentages of our income on purchasing guarantees against when things go wrong. When we buy a car, we buy a warranty, because the only certainty about that new car is that its mechanical abilities are ultimately uncertain. We buy health insurance policies because we are uncertain about our health, we buy employment insurance because we are uncertain about our jobs, and we buy life insurance because we are uncertain about the length of our lives. The only certainty we have in life is that nothing is certain. However, the bible presents only a compilation of things upon which we can hang our proverbial hats, and the most spectacular of those things is that when we believe on Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of His bride, we have eternal life. John wrote both to move his readers to belief and then to assure them that upon that belief, they have certain eternal life. God does not lie, and He has promised us only certainties when it comes to Him. Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:13-14, “In him you also, when you heard the word of the truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” Our God is the ultimate Guarantor, the only true source of certainty that exists in a world of uncertainties, and He has guaranteed for us eternal life. Shouldn’t we rest in that? Study/Meditation: Read Ephesians 1:3-14.
