Off-Reservation voting- Continued…. This follows up on my September 18 post soliciting opinions on off-reservation voting access. Following the Sept. 16 primary, both Chairman candidates have spoken to the problem of off-reservation voter disenfranchisement and have pledged to change it. I’m still interested in hearing people’s perspectives on 1) Do you live on or off-rez? 2) will you vote on Nov. 4th? Why or why not? 3) Would you vote if you had access to absentee ballots or mailed ballots? 4) Do you support equal access to voting in our tribal elections? My email is longtimedog1@gmail All individual opinions are kept confidential and your name/info will not be shared without your consent. Some statistics (in rounded percentages) from responses recd to date: 90% of respondents reside off-reservation ; 10% reside on-reservation 70% of respondents DID NOT vote in the Primary; 30% DID vote in the primary Reasons cited by those who DID NOT vote in the primary – in order of frequency: 1. Cost; 2. Distance/family; 3. Lack of clarity on voting rules; 4. Fear of votes being denied or challenged; 5. Feeling of rampant corruption/hopelessness. Should there be off-reservation voting? 70% YES; 20% NOT SURE; 10% NO. As the General Election draws near, I’d like to gather additional opinions of tribal members thoughts on voting access to help inform the new Council and Constitutional Reform efforts. Thank you for your consideration.
