Santa Fe Player Becomes Ill, In Critical Condition Oct 11, 2014 By ROY FUOCO / THE LEDGER / LAKELAND | A Santa Fe Catholic High School football player became ill and was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was in critical condition Saturday, school officials said. The school didnt identify the student or the type of illness. Santa Fe Catholic Principal Matt Franzino released this statement: “One of our students was taken to the hospital because of a serious illness. He is in critical condition, and his prognosis is unknown at this time. As a precautionary measure, we did report the students admission to the hospital to the Department of Health. We have received no further instructions regarding safety measures.” School officials said Santa Fes football game against Seffner Christian scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday had been postponed indefinitely. The game had been initially scheduled for Thursday night but was moved because of an outbreak of a stomach illness that affected students and faculty at the school in Lakeland. About 25 students were sick Thursday with the virus. The school was closed on Friday and extracurricular activities and sporting events were canceled.
