Off to explore the rest of the Lalibela underground churches today. These structures were literally cut from the top of a rock down to the bottom and then the inside of the churches were carved from the ground up. One reason to keep the churches underground was so that invading armies wouldnt be able to see them. Still trying to get our heads around the vision and engineering to accomplish this in the 12th century without any machinery. Just amazing. These churches have been used continually since they were built. You can feel the 800 years of ritual and history when you are inside.
