Often, law enforcement agencies are criticized for issuing tickets - TopicsExpress

Often, law enforcement agencies are criticized for issuing tickets to motorists. Heres a message from Deputy First Class Mike Roj regarding a ticket he issued yesterday, right here in Windham County. Yesterday, a ticket saved a life: Yesterday morning I was assigned to the taskforce and was on patrol in Dummerston. I stopped a car for speeding and noticed that the operator wasnt wearing a seatbelt. During our conversation I found that she was dealing with several family issues... Lots of tears and disappointment. Her focus was on the care for her son. I issued her the ticket and we had a rather lengthy conversation about the importance of her safety and ensuring that she was buckled up just in case she was ever involved in a collision. How important this message would later become. Today I found out that hours after our meeting, she was the victim of a high speed crash that occurred on Rt-30. I was told that she had reached out for me and was thankful for being stopped and reminded of the importance of a seatbelt. I was able to contact her this afternoon and we shared many thoughts. Shes hurting and injured, but still alive. She repeatedly thanked me for being there that morning and making a difference in her life. She was grateful for me saving her life so she could take care of her son. She also forwarded to me a photo of her son and couldnt thank me enough. Today is an afternoon that I wont soon forget and was possible because of the two of you and so many others who make GHSP CIOT possible. Over the years we know were making a difference. However yesterday that difference had a specific name, place and time. As you know, Ive spent almost 30 years providing public safety to Vermonters. The last decade focused on highway safety. Over the years Ive shared in much success, accomplishments and a few tragedies. When I left state police, I thought that most of my greatest hits were behind me. Today I know I was wrong. Because today Im able to celebrate perhaps my most memorable accomplishment. Something that is emotional and tangible. I was able to ensure that a little boy cares only that his mommy is going to be ok and able to recover from her injuries so she can take care of him. We should all take a moment to enjoy our accomplishment and know that yesterday WE did make a difference! Respectfully Yours Michael Roj
