Often when I travel, I talk about graduate medical education (GME)—training medical school grads to be ready to practice medicine in the real world—and the enormous challenges confronting us as we grapple with a federal cap on funding for that training while facing a shortfall of 130,600 physicians, equally split between primary care and specialties, by 2025. It is a national crisis already well in the making, as the recent news External Link about delayed care for veterans has shown us, and I feel strongly about the need to do everything we can to mitigate it.
