Oh fellow martial arts communityI need some help here from you old timers like me. R&B singer and Grandmaster Jerry Bell Of Black Ryu was the first American to win the Kumite in Japan and won several times. Frank Dux of Dux Ryu claims to have been the first American to have won the The Kumite and that Jean Claude Van Damme film is based on it. I know the meaning of the word Kumite, but Was Kumite just a generic term for all advanced level competitions in Asia? And then there is this: The 1988 movie, Bloodsport, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Frank Dux, was actually based on Jerry Bell, who fought, and won the Kumite twice. It seems Frank took credit for something he never did. We know there is much self ordained mythology in the martial arts. Is Jerry Bell the real deal on the East Coast.
