Oh how I hate dog crates! I know it is a contentious issue, but I am against confining animals in this way. In a similar vein, my 2 horses live out in a field all year round and I would never confine them to a wooden cage, or stable as people call them! So often I see on facebook people state how their dog is wrecking their home and so many people cry out crate them!. Rarely do people consider the age of the dog, how much exercise, play, stimulation it is getting. Is it left for hours on its own with no company? Does it have any toys/chews? What is it fed? Is it fed a dry food pumped full of sugar and additives such as Bakers? Too often dog owners seem to be looking for the quick fix of I dont like what the dog is doing, how do I stop it?, rather than WHY is my dog doing this, is he stressed, lonely, bored etc.... Mitzy came to us having wrecked a kitchen in her old home after being shut away. She can be left for several hours with Sam and foster dog with no problem. Were now on our 12th foster dog and with careful intros, have never had to use a crate. Yes, sometimes things get chewed, usually when the girls have left something out they should have put away. Yes, food sometimes gets taken from the kitchen surface - we should have moved it! Latest photo I see is of a stack of Christmas presents under the tree ripped apart by a boxer left home with them. We never leave presents under the tree with dogs - its pushing your luck! Im so fed up hearing about crates, anti-bark collars, choke chains, prong collars etc, why cant we LISTEN to the dog and find a solution rather than just confining them?
