Oh our falling standards of English! Just seen this somewhere: Your gaze is as good as mine. Amused more than annoyed me. The remedy is for the education ministry to give English prominence over Kiswahili in the syllabus. Lets face it, other than sentimentalism, why put the two languages at par? English is not only the language of instruction in school, it is also the major language in international socio-eco-political affairs. Many economies that dont use English are beginning to realize how this hampers trade and affects business, and are doing everything possible to remedy the situation. Yet in Kenya we want to deceive ourselves that a person wishing to do a pedigree professional degree course at varsity is passable as long as they can speak and write Swahili. Let me put it on the table, most Kenyans know all the Swahili theyll need in their life by the time they are twelve. As such Kiswahili should be either a non-examinable subject, or at most a choice subject for those whod like to pursue it in tertiary education. The only loss we would suffer are the numerous job opportunities it offers to those who teach and write books. The gain would be higher levels of English that i never again have to read again a ridiculous expression as the one above.
