Oh, sorry, the one I just posted Published on Mar 1, 2014 Purcell Code images can be found here - https://facebook/krislennoxpiano Crypto Challenge based on this vid can be found at https://youtube/watch?v=4MEVD... Musicians, in general, are natural pattern recognition machines. We have to be - finding structure within apparent randomness is one of the few ways of memorising hours upon hours of music. Unfortunately, sight can also blind, in that when we learn to see a certain way, we no longer look, as we feel we know the nature of something. Which probably explains why structures such as the one illustrated here havent received illumination in over 300 years. The system of analysis employed here works to a point, then doesnt. In much the same way that conventional analysis works to a point, but has its limits. Ive looked (so far) at around 25 Purcell works, and they all have a very beautiful and delicate structuring underlying the counterpoint/harmony etc. All of these structures are based on various geometric systems outlined by Euclid. I originally worked on a mathematical illustration of the Purcell Code, but abandoned that video in favour of a purely visual illustration - which I feel is far more effective, and accessible. The maths can also be yielded from the visual alone. Personally, I love deadmau5s arrangement of the Purcell Code (PS the track is Clockwork by deadmau5) . Ive created my own version of the Code (solo piano), soon to be published by my publishers, Music Sales. If anyone is interested in the score, ill put a link here. A video will also be available soon of the fabulous Didi performing this work. I have doubt when it comes to posting videos such as this, that reveal aspects of structure. Im ambivalent. The mathematical systems used to analyse are perfect - footprints of the gods, if you will. It feels, in a sense, unclean to apply such systems to giving insight into various aspects of reality. For me, its like having a direct phone number for God, then phoning and asking for help to wash the dishes in the kitchen sink. That aside, I intend to post a handful more videos like this in the near future. The next one will actually be a challenge - cryptography - a Purcell Code Crypto Challenge (ill post it within the month, hopefully). I have a number of crypto-related works in the pipeline - more on this very soon. Going back to systems working to a point - im ok with this - what I find of most interest is why they cease to work. The why is surely the important question. Given this, the system illustrated in this video eventually fails as a method of analysis as a consequence of frequency exponentials. There is a direct connection between this and Bertrands Postulate (i.e there always being a prime between n and 2n). Anyway, back to the Purcell Code! Yes, the method illustrated here is also a great way of analysing harmony. Triads can be plotted as triangles within the circle. Dissonance can be mapped as a ratio of surface area. The augmented chord will be the largest chord, given its equilateral nature, but we musicians know the augmented chord certainly isnt the least dissonant of the chords. The system is also dependent on chord (mathematical chord) length. Equilaterals have, in short, no harmonic/directional pull. This system - which is basically trigonometry - can be used to map relative dissonance within any system i.e any n-note EDO. This in itself is significant, as it allows us to easily depart from the present 12-tone system. Add a little combinatorics to the mix, and every possible harmonic system can be analysed and mapped in such a way. If anyone wishes for more Purcell Code illustrations, do let me know. Ive tried a number of composers, but Purcell shines. However, ive made some interesting discoveries with Mozart - especially so with The Magic Flute (the entire structure, analysed with the cryptographic eye, suggests deeply embedded substructures. A libretto behind the libretto (but certainly not a conspiracy theorist Mozart was an alien text!) When this research is complete, ill post the results. If it falls apart, ill also inform!!). PS the keen eye will notice the golden ratio in the white highlights at the end of the first cycle. Big up to Wendy Carlos for resurrecting the Purcell Code - perfectly so, given the title of the Kubrick movie. All best Enjoy Kris :)) Music Clockwork (Robbie Rivera Juicy ibiza Edit) by Deadmau5 (Google Play • eMusic • AmazonMP3 • iTunes) Category Music License Standard YouTube License SHOW LESS
