Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! Then I - TopicsExpress

Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands. I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws. Psalm 119:5-7 Read between the lines of the words you just read from Psalm 119. They speak for you: “Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! But they are not. I waver with temptation. I fall to sin. The only thing that is steadfast in my life is selfishness. My ways are just that – my ways. I show little regard for what you want, Lord, and am really good at doing what I want. And now, I suffer great regret because I am reaping what I have sown. “Oh, if I had only listened to you, Lord. Then I would not be put to shame. But I am put to shame. I am appalled at myself. I feel so foolish, so filthy, so afraid! When I consider your commands, I’ve mastered trashing all of them. I have done more than just let you down. I have defiantly sinned against you, Lord. What sick words can even describe the guilt I am feeling right now? “And yet, I praise you. How can that be? It is only because in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. Oh Lord, I can only trust in you, the compassionate and gracious God who forgives sins. Renew me with the good news of my Savior, Jesus Christ. “Help me to see my substitute. Strengthen my faith to know that as Jesus’ bloody death on the cross made payment for my sin, so also his blameless life is credited to my account. Compel me to no longer live for myself but for him who died for me and was raised again. And finally, may I learn, learn, LEARN your decrees, thankful that you have made me upright in your sight. Keep me a humble student of your Word. Prayer: “To you, gracious God and Lord, alone be the glory forever and ever! Amen.”
