Oh, the sorry state of broadcast news in the United States. Yesterday was not a slow news day. Far from it. Yet, watching NBC at 6:30 last night, I was amazed and angered at how, after the first five minutes, the show was filled to the brim with Pablum-- cute dog, celebrity overcoming dread illness, trained otter and seal spinning balls on their noses (okay, I made up that last one). I dont think NBC is alone in its dumbing down the news, and I cant think of any U.S. channel that has much heft and integrity left in its news programming (possible exception PBS). It is time for a new slogan for the news offering from the Americas fourth (or fifth) estate. Any suggestions for one?
