Oh wow, this is rather upsetting. Not to say that Ive been wasting time on the internet or anything (har har) but I just discovered that Miley Cyrus got a nose job. The reason this is significant to me is that prior to her surgery, her nose was a lot like mine. Kind of round and button-ish on the end and wide in the middle. I have a very good nose that looks nice on my face, and she had a very good nose too! Upon further investigation I found that other celebs who have undergone nose manipulation include Keira Knightley, Vanessa Hudgens, Adele, Blake lively, Rihanna, Zac Efron (a dude?!#@!), Natalie Portman, Jennifer-Aniston, Kate Winslet (I thought she was all about self esteem and body acceptance... what happened?) Beyonce, Ryan Gosling (another dude, hmm) Scarlett Johansson... The list goes on and on and on. Name an actress, any actress, and she probably has a nose job. As if its not alarming enough that just about every one of these idolized faces that we see in the movies and on MTV has been surgically altered, I cant help but notice that all the noses are getting thinner. Even african American women who naturally have very wide, flat noses are getting narrowing surgery. I find this appalling! Its as if the physical traits that are natural to their race are somehow not acceptable. I mean, if youre black and youre going to surgically change your face, why not go Michael Jackson and bleach your whole skin too, and srugerize your nose till it falls right off? He ended up looking SO attractive, right? Frankly, I dont think any of these people look better post operation. The nose thinning gives them all a pinched look as though theyve smelled a bad smell. I hear a lot of complaints about unrealistic beauty standards. Now, some of them I can get behind to some degree. Its healthier to be thin and fit than it is to be overweight, therefore fit is desirable. A clear complexion is also a sign of good health. Even the obsession with having long/luscious/shiny hair is understandable because such hair is often connected with HEALTH and YOUTH... two genuinely very lovely things to possess. But the whole nose thing is just ridiculous. Nose shape is in no way related to or indicative of good health, wellness, or youth in any way. It has nothing to do with class, intelligence, longevity, trustworthiness (unless youre Pinocchio), kindness, or any other virtues. I see no reason why thin noses should be coveted and wide noses should be trimmed down. Big noses can look great. They can balance out a round face. They can cast a dramatic shadow. They can smell stuff. If I jumped into the Hollywood world, my nose would not be acceptable, and thats just ridiculous because Im generally considered an attractive person and my nose is perfectly fine the way it is. And so is yours. I would not change it for the world. Love your nose, big or small. Love all the natural noses!
