Oil pulling is a traditional folk remedy that involves swishing - TopicsExpress

Oil pulling is a traditional folk remedy that involves swishing oil in the mouth. Ayurvedic literature describes oil pulling as capable of both improving oral health and treating systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus or asthma. Studies have suggested that it may reduce oral plaque, halitosis, and gingivitis when included in a regular oral healthcare program. Oil pulling is usually recommended to be done first thing in the morning. Rinse the mouth by swishing approximately one tablespoon of oil for 10–15 minutes (on an empty stomach) then spit it out being careful not to swallow. Some suggest this be followed by rinsing the mouth with (sea salt) salt water and then brushing the teeth, gums, tongue (softly) and palate thoroughly in a normal morning routine. Cold pressed (raw) oil is often said to be critical to the alleged effectiveness. Sesame oil, coconut oil and ghee are traditionally used, but newer oils such as sunflower oil and olive oil are recommended by some practitioners. Hundreds of testimonials from people who experienced benefits from oil pulling, have included help with skin conditions, arthritis, asthma, headaches, hormone imbalances, infections, liver problems and more.
