Ok Colleen Laffey Ashley Thomas Ill play, from the climber side.... Im so Fayetteville that ....I remember my first Gauleyfest at Burnwood, not knowing it was Gauleyfest or that this other species of adventurers (boaters) even existed around here. We just rolled in, were welcomed and had beer poured in us (I think literally) and staggered down to the Bridge Buttress to pass out ....,sleeping at the Bridge Buttress every weekend under the cliff or in back of the truck and getting harassed (including fights, threatened with guns, etc) by drunk locals who were confusing us with that third species of adventurers who frequented the gorge and used the bridge as a pickup spot (actually nationally known as such a spot) ....,also sleeping in the other camping spot, the condom field also known as Teays and waking up after a late night drive to get here to climb, waking up on the ground, looking all around me and discovering the namesake. ....buying expansion bolts and cold shuts at the hardware store (Ramseys I think) in Fayetteville for new routes in the gorge ......driving into Fayetteville, finding nowhere to eat then driving to oak hill to eat either 4 circle spicy chicken at Peking or sidling up to the trough at the Golden Colon .....and like others, eating at the Pancake House every morning (and many late nights) to connect with climbers. And, Being totally embarrassed by my comrades who didnt have the sense to NOT wear their pink leopard stripe, teddy bear, or other loud print Lycra ( complete with holes in butt and/or crotch) into the restaurant. I for one never wore Lycra, for no other reason than that in those days keeping a low profile or trying to blend in to the community seemed like a much better strategy. From anyones perspective rafting the gorge seemed far more rational than rappelling on some rock wall.... Ok gotta get back to work
