Ok, Dans Quick Movie Reviews are back!!!!!!! Just saw one this weekend that revived my page. Here it is... Interstellar B+ Unlike many other film directors, Christopher Nolan knows the correct way to bake the cake. I watch movies all the time. Sometimes I can see 7-10 flicks a week. I know, its scary. But what I have come to realize, and you may have heard this before, is that Christopher Nolan can inject story, emotion and heart into grand, big-budget, blockbuster action movies. Not too many directors can do this because its no easy feat. So, the story is this.... Cooper is a retired specialist pilot thats been reduced to farming to support his children in the wake of the inevitable deterioration of the earth itself. And, as destiny would have it, hes given the opportunity to use his unique skills on an interstellar mission to find a new home planet before this one dies. He has to leave everyone he loves behind to forge ahead on the more important path. Now, this is undoubtedly a science-fiction film and with it come the cookie-cutter hooks. Youve got possible aliens, ghosts, wicked cool space crafts and an unforeseen baddy. But, like I mentioned above, my man Christopher Nolan knows just how to take that nerd-orgasm and infuse it with actual real-life emotion and substance. Have you seen 2001: A Space Odyssey??? If you havent then I say, Great!! Youre better off. If you havent seen that one by now you probably wont get it anyway. Stay away!!! However, for all of you who were graced with the pleasure of knowing perhaps the greatest film in cinematic history, then youll probably recognize a few scenes in Interstellar. Nolan doesnt rob 2001, but its plainly obvious that he was totally enraptured by it. Flying past Saturn is one such instance, and I think everyone will agree with me that the climax of the film is a direct correlation to his love for the Space Odyssey....with a twist. Before I end I have to recognize Hans Zimmer. Arguably my favorite film composer. To be honest, I thought he might be in the twilight of his career. The last two or three were not to the same standard Ive become accustom to in the great pantheon of Zimmer scores. Well, I eat crow! And I give credit to Nolan again. He took a page out of the Terrence Malick composer guide. Nolan went to Zimmer (with whom he worked before) and offered him another job. However, this time around he did not tell Zimmer what the movie was about. He simply handed him a piece of paper with a few sentences on it, about the heart of the film, and asked Zimmer to start composing. The result is simple and beautiful. Zimmer has taken a step to the side of what hes known for and delivered a score that is fresh and powerful. Lets just say...when you get a German behind a classical organ, the music-boners are rock hard! So, in closing....Does Cooper succeed? Is there something else on the other side of the Universe? I dunno. What I do know is that youre always safe in the warm embrace of Christopher Nolan. -Dan 11/17/14 YOUTUBE TRAILER: https://youtube/watch?v=ePbKGoIGAXY
