Ok, I was challenged by Derwin Mello Bios to put down my top 20 Hiphop albums. It was really difficult and no matter how you slice it, as someone whos grown up in the culture, theres no way to make a top 20 that wont leave out someone. I decided to list the top 20 most connected to memories of growing up. Here we go: Eazy-E -Eazy Duz It 1988 Sir Mix-a-lot - Mack Daddy 1992 Snoop Dogg- Doggystyle 1993 Kool Keith - Dr. Octogonecologyst 1996 Company Flow- Funcrusher Plus 1997 Big Pun- Capital Punishment 1998 Dynospectrum 1998 Deep Puddle Dynamics - Taste of Rain… Why Kneel? 1999 Dead Prez- Let’s Get Free 2000 Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP 2000 Typical Cats - Typical Cats 2001 Aesop Rock - Labor Days 2001 Cannibal Ox - Cold Vein 2001 Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Part 2 2003 Brother Ali - Shadows on the Sun 2003 Outkast - Speakerboxxx/Love Below 2003 Qwel - The Harvest 2004 Eyedea and Abilities - E&A 2004 Z-Ro - Crack 2008 The Underachievers - Indigoism 2013 Didn’t fit on the list but couldn’t be missed: Solesides Greatest Bumps 2000 (This album allows me to include (Gift of Gab, Lateef the Truthspeaker, Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow, etc. all in one. DJ Michael Watts - Something 2 Smoke 2 2k9. This album got played at Planet K North nearly every shift I worked, and I would consistently get person after person asking where they could find this album; maybe one of the best ever. This was a lot harder than I thought it would be. There’s no Atmosphere album ( I couldn’t choose between them) Doseone’s Hemispheres probably belongs on my list. I had to bump some like Liquid Swords, Illmatic and Black Star off my list also, as well as some mixtapes (The Weathermen, Big Baby Ghandi, Heems, Kool A.D., Das Racist, Chalie Boy) I challenge Christopher Hall, Eroc Arroyo-Montano and Tim Fitzgerald to make a top 20 Hiphop albums list as well.
