Ok, Ive just about had it with these evening political talk shows - TopicsExpress

Ok, Ive just about had it with these evening political talk shows currently being shoved down the throats of scandal hungry Pakistanis. It pisses me off immensely that the role of the countrys parliamentarians has shifted from the corridors of Parliament to the studios of our Media groups.. jousting with political experts conducting media circuses and trials, trying to govern the perception of the masses rather than actually governing the damn country! And thats just the beginning.. these talk shows are wrong in so many levels that you cant even say it all in one paragraph! Let start with the hosts of these shows. Most are educated, some not so much in the formal sense, but vast experience dealing with the local political magarmach (alligators yo!) have made them also a very sought after commodity in these media groups! I say commodity because, at the end of the day, these talk shows are just about Rating=Advertising=Money! The average hour long shows are actually 24-28 minutes of selling phones and SIMS, with the remainder of the time politicians selling their lies to the masses. Whether or not a host is ethically correct in the way he/she presents a show, I wont go into because I dont know what is in their hearts. Only Allah knows! However, I will say that we tend to give ON AIR time to a lot of people who shouldnt have the spotlight. The message that is going to be delivered the loudest, with the most spice in the most entertaining way, is the one these hosts aim for. Its all about the ratings, right? So they craftily prick the politicians with accusations leveled by their opponents, who are sitting next to them, and before you know it all we can hear are grown men acting like dogs to see who can bark the loudest. All the while, the only thing the hosts think of are Ratings. The hosts still have to be careful, the rating also depends on the quality of dogs.. I mean politicians.. they can get into their studios, so the questions can be tough, but not damaging enough.. inquisitive but not probing enough.. critical but not seeking accountability. So they go something like this.. Host: Sir, tau aaj poore kaum ke samne, hamara show mein, bataaa he dain.. kia baat thi!!!?? Politician: Chorein, rehkne dain, kuch baatein batanein wali nahe hotien! Host: Laiken, apko be pata hae aur mujhe be pata hae ke behind the doors kia scene hae... [gives cheeky smile to the politician] Politician: bus.. hahaha.. bus.. hohohohoho Host: chalein aage chaltein hain.. Lakh de lanaat!!! At this point, Im almost screaming at the TV, and the only thing stopping me from hurling something hard at the screen is my father sitting next to me. I have a million questions I can ask the politician in that moment, questions that would require him/her to think analytically about them, questions that require substantial answer.. or just simple mind-boggling ones like Sir, when you talk about being the representative of the masses, someone who understands their pain and suffering... do you think its appropriate for you to wear a 1.5 million rupee watch, and sit here looking like youve just come from a wedding, dressed like a wealthy pimp? I guess I would have one very successful episode.. Another thing that really rubs me the wrong way is when a host has somehow managed to corner a politician about the latest corruption scandal and is asking the all important WHY!!!??? question... the politician, with no other defense.. points a finger at the dog sitting next to him, same species.. different breed..and says They did it too. This takes us back the first point I made.. all hell breaks loose and the barking session ensues again! I can go on and on about these shows but Ive just decided to stop watching them and Ive never made a wiser decision. If you really do care for this country and the people of Pakistan, then all these show do is depress you.. crush your pride and kill your zeal. Youre better off researching about issues on your own and making your own educated minds up rather than having to listen to someone elses agenda, which may or may not be the best thing for Pakistan.
