Ok My turn to RANT!! We just picked up 4 ferrets today that I had seen on Craigslist almost a month ago. The person was originally asking $400 for them and they ended up giving them to us, a surrender to our shelter. The original conversation was how are they? Any health problems? Both of which I was advised everything is good with them. No mention until later that one is older at least 9 years old and he has adrenal disease, though untreated. The people prior to surrendering them to us wanted to trade something of value for them up to I am figuring about $300 though I had made an offer at one time they turned it down. Turn the page to the past few days, I got regular text message: Do you still want the ferrets?? When can you come get the ferrets? Do you have a friend to pick up the ferrets? My husband wants the ferrets gone when can you get them?? Come to today on Saturday I was working closer to Houston so could easily run after work to pick them up. We get there and she is cleaning the cage with a hose outside, (power washing in her book). And she has 4 kids that bring the ferrets outside. The ferrets are being carried by their neck, not scruffing mind you but by the necks with bodies stretched out. The mother was no better at handling them. One look and you could tell these lil furry critters have not been cared for. They are extremely underweight, and just kind of lethargic. We quickly grab our carriers to bring them home in before the overwhelming urge gets away and we start treating these people like they have treated the ferrets. The items also turned over to us with the ferrets, a ferret nation cage and one bed and a blanket, couple litter boxes. We got them in the car and they looked like they would barely make the ride home. We stopped and got food, water and pedialyte for them and they drank a lil coughed and laid down. Finally calming down once all were put in one carrier with their blanket. We get them home and let them out and they are almost shocked like we get to come out now?? Though slowly at first they each came out and drank a little bit before exploration began. Within 15 minutes the dooking began and some playful jumping around before more exploring. Even the old one was dooking and running around. Yet could still tell they have not been cared for. We know it’s going to be a challenge to get them up to health with diet, vet care and some love though we did not open our home as a rescue to ignore even the frail ones like these. We do not know how long the old manfert will be with us though his days will be made to enjoy as much as he can. I just have to wonder though why someone would let their pets get to this bad of shape. I know some people just do not care, see them only as animals and not an actual part of the family. Yet there are many who view them as like a child and would do anything and everything for them. Makes one almost wish they had to pass a course in order to have pets. Almost like so many should have to pass a course before they breed as humans. It kills me to see the ferrets like this, though as long as they do not appear to be in pain or suffering they will now know they have found a loving and caring place to have fun. Kills me even more, to not want to punch someone in the face who treats their animals as such. We will keep everyone updated on the progress of these lil ones, with vet visits starting on Monday. Just keep them in your thoughts and send some positive energy this way for them. Thanks…(M)
