Ok. The date was December 21, 1963 and Jon-San Chevrolet Dealership was having their grand opening . I was only in the 4th grade and my parents took me out to the grand opening to see Santa Claus who was there in the dealership giving out Jiffy Pop Popcorn to the kids. Of course, I was afraid of Santa Claus so my mother went and got my Jiffy Pop Popcorn from Santa for me, while my dad signed a ticket in my name and dropped it in a huge wire bin for prize drawings later that afternoon. My parents and I left to go to Winn-Dixie to buy groceries for the week. As we pulled into the yard and got out of the car the telephone was ringing so I run into the house while my parents are getting the groceries out of the car and I answered the phone. The man said he wanted to speak to me and I said it was me. Well, he said: You have won a Shetland Pony from the drawing. My dad was just coming into the house with two bags of groceries and I yelled Daddy I won a pony.! My dad grabbed the phone and sure enough Jon San Chevrolet was giving out prizes but also had two Quarter Horses and a Shetland Pony to give away. If you remember they had horses in the field behind the dealership fenced in. My dad freaked out as I was jumping up and down. My dad said he had no way of getting the pony and the man on the telephone said if we could take the backseat out of the car. My dad said absolutely not and ended up borrowing my uncles pickup which had wooden sides on it and went and picked up the pony and had to take him over to my grandfathers house as he had two mules in a stable but had a smaller stable behind them. I named the pony Lucky as it was the first thing I had ever won and havent won anything else since. Kept the pony for 2 years and my parents bought me a $50.00 saddle for the pony that Christmas of 1963. Sold him for $50.00 later. I still have the winning ticket stub from December 21, 1963 that won me the pony.
