Ok, almost done boasting (...for the day at least.) Its just that in addition to all the emotion, pomp & circumstance already swirling around - today (swearing in ceremony) was just too amazing. So heres some more: Pic #1 My wife & I are often asked, When did Conner first determine he wanted to go to the AFA? This was the day. Thats our 3 Conner, Cayla, Chandler. Conners 9 in this pic, taken at the AFA on one of our first visits. He got a good look at that place and said, This is awesome! Can I go here?! We said, Of course you can, son. But thats not gonna be easy. He buckled down and got to work almost the very next day. True story. He got focused and followed thru with his dream. The kid had piles of recruiting letters and scholarship offers from coast-to-coast. On her personal wall this afternoon my wife wrote; I had told Conner that I really applaud him for taking the higher (albeit much tougher) road concerning his college education and ultimately his career. By graduation he had received a stack of college acceptance letters and scholarship offers, but he didnt give any of them a 2nd thought. He said he wanted AFA because it was so much more than an education. Pretty cool for a 17 yr old! Pic #2 After todays swearing in they got changed into standard-issue shorts & tshirts and prepared for the first portion of the fitness test. Pic #3 A part of todays fitness test included the mile and a half run. Im thinking the boy did alright on that one. (for those who dont know, he won our state championship in the 3200m [2 mile] last month, runner up in the 1600m [lost by .28secs]) Pic #4 This mornings swearing in, A thru C squadrons, at rest (not attention) Pic #5 An upclose at the swearing in. Pic #6 Thats his squadron, the Cobras, after having taken their oath of office, saluting the flag theyve just sworn to defend. Conners 4th back in the right column. * I share all this in part b/c Im a proud papa & this has been a banner day. In part b/c many of you are appreciative and enjoy the being happy for us and living vicariously thru our experience. And in no small way b/c, over the years as Ive been chronicling and sharing Conners journey, no small number of you have emailed me in times past and said some version of, I show [my son/daughter] your posts about Conner and he/she gets so inspired! Well, if you still have school-aged youngsters in the house here you go. Hard work, discipline, and commitment to the right path DO pay off. Even in high school, youngster. Always shoot for the moon, that way even if you miss it you still land on a cloud.
