Ok everyone, heres a thought, (I do have them sometimes) as many of us are planning to join Karen Toolan in her bid to give something up for November and raise money for a good cause at the same time, I thought it might be nice to get ourselves a little organised in the meantime. As some of you may be aware of (due to my over zealous doctor) I am currently undergoing cardiac tests. The first of which was to wear an ambulatory monitor and to keep a diary for 24 hrs, which fortunately is coming off straight after I complete this post, as the pads are causing a skin rash lol. Now wearing this contraption and keeping a diary has made me aware of my day to day activity. Yes I go on a 2 mile walk every morning but I also spend long periods at my desk typing, speaking to clients etc. Here is my idea, tomorrow is the 24th and one week to the end of the month, if you are thinking about joining us, start a journal, just in a note pad. Before you begin divide it into sections. Something like the following. Wake up at Breakfast Lunch Dinner Snacks Activities during the day Exercise Meditation Me time Emotions. Favourite tv Groups/commitments All these factors need to go in, no one else will see it, but I guarantee when you see your day all marked out, it is rather sobering. Also this will help you to make SMART goals. which are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic targets. It would be a waste of your time to say in November I will do 30 mins in the gym everyday, if you dont actually have those 30 mins to spare and all that would happen is you would end up feeling a failure. But if when you look at your journal you see that by getting off the bus, a stop before, you can get in ten minutes of walking twice a day and if you use the stairs instead of the lift perhaps another 10 mins exercise, you will see that you can achieve your goal. Or perhaps you have determined to stop snacking, you might see that you do this , because you eat too early, maybe because you bored, or lonely, once this is acknowledged you can take steps to change it. You might decide to put meditation into the slot where you normally snack, far better for you. Or decide to join a new group, fit the gym in here, what ever feels right for you, that is the most important thing when changing life patterns etc, they need to be sustainable, something that can become the norm. Remember no one needs to see these journals but you, but I imagine that come next Friday when we all pledge our give ups and do mores, you will have a far better idea, of what these should be and how to achieve them. Love and light to you all, Maria xx
