Ok, for a change a good challenge, and indeed a challenging one. I have been challenged by Nidhi to name my 10 favorite books.. But she did not say fiction or non-fiction so I will make separate lists for both... (Quit whining, I could have made a different list for Graphic Novels too) Fiction 1. Harry Potter Series - Nuff said 2. Angels and Demons - Dan Brown.. A book persuasive enough to make me question my religious beliefs and scientific inclinations. Not to mention I was up till 4 in the morning the first time I read it and could not sleep until I completed it (single sitting, 9 hours straight) 3. The Diary of A Young Girl - Anne Frank and Maus... I clump these two together because they deal with similar issues of Holocaust and religious persecution, albeit from different angles and perspectives. The books shock you, horrify you, sadden you and when you turn that last page, you realize you are not the same person you were when you opened that book for the first time 4. Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini.. Heart wrenching writing, period. The story isnt anything you havent heard before, the characters are predictable but the book moves you by the sheer brilliance of the crafting of the words 5. The Earth Gods - Kahlil Gibran.. Not exactly a book but still one of my favorites. Contains one of the truest lines I have ever read, To make his (humans) fancy like the eagle of the mountain, And his thought as the tempest of the seas, And yet to give him hands slow in decision, And feet heavy with deliberation 6. Perks of Being a Wallflower - Chbosky.. Not exactly my usual kind of read but the book reminded me that honest writing is the strongest, most impactful. You do not need big words and fancy language for a story to connect. You can do the same by simply being honest. 7. Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister - Lynn and Jay... Novelizations of the serial but brilliant writing nevertheless. Hilarious, yet surgically precise, not to mention incisive into the inner workings of the government 8. V for Vendetta - Alan Moore... If anyone, ever, says to you that comics are for kids, make the dumbass read V for Vendetta. If you thought the movie was good, you have no idea, my sweet summer child. 9. The Asterix Series - You have not understood what funny is until you have read Asterix. Every frame has a joke and most of the jokes are not just funny but also intelligent. And the jokes are so well crafted that they are equally funny to a 7 year old and a 70 year old, though for different reasons. 10. Death Note - An idealist teenager finds a notebook that grants him the power to kill anyone he knows the name and face of and an international, reclusive detective who tries to capture him. And they both live in the same building (vaguely). If you are not already googling that shit, shame on you. 11. 1984 - George Orwell.. For obvious reasons Non Fiction. Well, writing this post made me realize i have read a lot more non-fiction than fiction of late 1. The Definitive Book of Body Language - Alan and Barbara Pease... When they say definitive, they mean definitive. Last book you will ever need on the topic. 2. The Argumentative Indian - Amartya Sen.. Reading the books makes you realize that not every Nobel Prize is handed out in kiss-assery like it was done to Obama. 3. Influence - Robert Cialdini.. The most authoritative text on psychology and science behind persuasion. A boon for every socially challenged evil master mind in the making. 4. Liespotting - Pamela Meyers.. Again, the same as the book on body langauge. Last book you will ever need 5. Feynman Lectures - Nuff said 6. Brief History of Time - Same 6. Brief HIstory of Everything - Ken Wilbur.. Most of my ideas and philosophical views about the world, feminism and gender has been shamelessly lifted off this book. Shamelessly. 7. How to win friend and Influence People - Dale Carnegie.. If you can look past the somewhat dated references, this book has some deceptively simple advice on how to live a happier life. Robin Sharma can go eat his heart out, he hasnt said anything Carnegie hasnt already. 8. Wired for Story - Lisa Cron.. A MUST READ book for every aspiring author. First book I ever took notes while reading 9. Defending the Undefendables - Walter Block.. Brilliant book for anyone who wishes to learn how to prove that black is white to anyone. And succeed. 10. Argumentation and Debate - In all fairness, this is a textbook and I have not completed it yet but I have read significant sections of it and I am loving every word of it so far.
