Ok kiddos, weve got a beloved sci/fi book turned movie to discuss - TopicsExpress

Ok kiddos, weve got a beloved sci/fi book turned movie to discuss tonight. I just got back from the sneak peak of Enders Game and Im still collecting my thoughts a bit. Ok, here goes. Enders Game is about a gifted young boy who is taken by the military to be raised as the savior of mankind before a species of ant like aliens comes back for a third time to finish us off. I read the book for the first time about 3 months ago and while I didnt fall in love with it I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. So how did they do? Well I can honestly say that this is a fine movie. The graphics are fine, the acting is fine, the whole adaptation is fine. But there in lies the problem. Everything about this movie is just fine. Nothing stands out as amazing, nothing is a must see moment but on the flip side nothing is really that bad either. The two problems I did have were first: everything felt so rushed. They were in such a hurry to catch all the big key moments in the book that you lose a sense of time. What took months in the book feels like a day in the movie. In fact the entire movie almost gives you the sense that the entire journey took him about a week to complete and the moment one scene ends its on to the next phase. The second problem I had was the lack of action. There are exactly 2 laser tag games and 2 space battles in this movie lasting an average of 4 minutes each. What action you do get is really cool, its just sad they gloss over it so fast like everything else in this movie to make way for the next important part. Even the big emotional pay off of the ending lasts about 10 seconds before they rush in an everything will be ok epilogue therefore not giving you the time you need to really let it all sink in and mean anything to you. Ultimately this movie will get a few different responses. There will be a few who absolutely love it, a few who hate it and I believe the majority that will say its alright! . Its a movie that you could watch a time or two in your life and be fine with but will probably never have the desire to watch it again. Of course there will be that annoying fourth crowd that wont stop comparing everything to the book demanding they squeeze every situation and ounce of dialog out of the book and into the movie. You have my full permission to slap them upside the head and say dude. Its just a movie bro. You can only squeeze so much into 2 hours. So chill. So finally at the end of the day if you are just dying to see this and know its your thing by all means go out and see it. You wont be disappointed. For everyone else go to the matinee or discount theater as I think this type of movie warrents the theater experience as it will lose something on the small screen but just doesnt quite deliver enough to be full price. So how did I feel you ask? Well (said with a shrug) its alright. 3 out of 5.
