Ok my very clever Friesian has discovered canter and it has transformed him from quite a lazy boy into a rather exuberant chap. The problem I have is the transition. He normally gets correct strike of but for the first few strides is broncking, thankfully Ive managed to stay on and then he settles into a very nice forward canter. He,s 17hh, long legged so,perhaps he,s just placing his feet. Ive been working on his canter in the arena now for two weeks, not everyday of course, and still each time he feels as if he is thinking of throwing me off. This is how Im asking him: trot active, but not hurried, bend to inside, I can feel, him in outside rein, sit to trot and keep, inside leg still, outside leg slightly behind girth and a gentle nudge, I,dont bang. Also I dont hang onto reins so I allow him the room to,go,forward. The transition is a bit explosive, its almost as if he,s saying woohoo, but I suspect he,s being a bit naughty. Once in canter its wonderful. Any ideas, as Im sure its just early learning stage but I want him out of this habit sooner rather than later. He has hacked for a year now and canters outside on tracks no problem. I feel as if now,we are cantering in the arena, its either stressing him or,exciting him. Thanks for, reading my post.
