Ok sorry but I have to say a few things.... Just heard and read some comments that have me very upset! People need to stop blaming the young nurse (and nurses in general) who cared for the Ebola patient. By all accounts - she is a smart, dedicated, hard working and all around outstanding nurse! I highly doubt she is unhygienic or that she did anything to put herself at greater personal risk. Not one account has said she didnt or was not following proper protocol! Maybe those who are blaming her and nurses in general should stop for a moment and be THANKFUL there are nurses/healthcare professionals willing to care for the sick... What if it was you, your family member, your child???? Youd want someone to help you and provide care...right??? She needs support and prayer, not to be attacked! This disease is highly lethal in humans and there is NO known antiviral medication that has been proven effective. Supportive care is the only treatment ( i.e. Giving fluids, maintaining pt.s BP, blood transfusions, and treating secondary infections). She was doing a job most of you wouldnt even consider!! As nursing students in this country we are taught from day 1: hand hygiene, how to properly put on and take off PPE, and the importance of not causing cross contamination! It is DRILLED into our heads!! Ever tried it??? Give it a whirl ...Put on PPE and THEN take it off AFTER treating a highly contagious patient....Isnt exactly easy! Also, you need to know the facts about how this disease is spread in humans. Human to human direct contact- through broken skin or mucous membranes - via bodily fluids or even bedding or clothing that has come in contact with these bodily fluids. Did you know it can be anywhere from 2-21days AFTER exposure before the onset of symptoms? Humans are not infectious until symptoms do appear, and often these symptoms arent properly identified right away because in the early onset, they are similar to ones you might exhibit with the flu. I believe this young nurse knew and understood all the proper protocol as well as the risks to her personally. And what did she do??? .....she provided care for her patient!!! Stop attacking her please! Pray for her healing.
