Ok, this will be my only post on the subject, and I fully expect many of you wont agree with me. Thats fine, you are entitled to your opinion, and I fully respect that. I will gladly respond to rebuttal from anyone who will also respect that I am entitled to my opinion. When allegations of Ray Rices assault on his then fiance, I was as shocked as anyone. It is nearly always absolutely inexcusable to hit a woman. Especially as a professional athlete, stronger than most. There is almost always a better way to control the situation. Rice admitted to this terrible act, disclosed details, and was suspended by the league for 2 games. This punishment was seen by many as being too light. I agree. However, that was the punishment handed down. Now, a video surfaces that shows what had already been admitted to publicly. The league proceeded to extend his suspension indefinitely, and the Baltimore Ravens cut him, and released themselves from all liability to his contract. Yes, what Ray Rice did was wrong. Yes, it was despicable. But his punishment had already been decided. The only new evidence is a video that the NFL claims they hadnt seen, which only corroborates the story Rice already told them. Nothing has changed in terms of what we do or dont know. Yet the NFL is being praised for making an example of Rice. The suspension should have stayed at two games. The truth of the matter is that, for as terrible of an act as it was, the NFL is overreacting to the public backlash of the original suspension. And instead of owning up to their overly soft punishment, they are showing that they do not have a real set of core values, other than doing what they think will make them the most money, without pissing off too many people. And if sacrificing a person like Ray Rice to cover their own incompetence is necessary, so be it.
