Ok, today was our visit with the oncologist and I LOVE HER!!!! She is just absolute greatness in a cute little bubbly package, LOL. They use the NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) staging system. This tumor was a Stage IIA; Histologic Grade G1 - Low combined histologic grade (favorable); Histopathologic Type - Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. It was ER+; PR+; HER-; and KI67 low. Now, what all this means is that surgery is a must (and already done) need for chemo is questionable; need for radiation therapy is questionable; and I will be on hormone blockers for 10 years. Further testing is being done. Oncotype DX testing on the tumor will be done and if the results come in as low, then no chemo. If it comes in as intermediate or high, then we do chemo. She did say that because of the KI67 result we have already, she expects this to come back with a low result. However, that is NOT a given, just her best guess, and the reason they actually do the testing is to be sure. We are also doing some other genomic testing, that will include BRCA testing. If the BRCA comes back positive, we will remove the other breast and the ovaries to avoid recurrence. These tests will also give us valuable information for future generations. I will also have a PET scan, if insurance approves it, or a CT scan if they dont. Had a lot of blood drawn today, PET scan scheduled for the day before Thanksgiving, and appointment to get all these results on December 3rd. Of course we will want to start any necessary therapies ASAP, so I went out on a limb and told her that we have tickets for Fleetwood Mac on December 14 and I was wondering if I might need to send Garrys daughter to that concert with him. Sorry, Alysha, she said NO WAY!!! Youre going to GO to that concert! We will schedule around that. Is there any way you can take me with you?. Told you I loved her ;-) So, while we are still hoping to avoid chemo completely, we do have some scheduling flexibility in the event that it is necessary. So, I guess this is my round about way of saying...I still dont know what the game plan is...but at least we have several plans lined out pending test results. I do recall that one of the first thing she said to me was that I had a great story (having the unscheduled mammogram when I went in for other x-rays and finding this by accident) and its totally treatable...the same phrase Ive heard from every physician involved in my care thus far. God is truly awesome and holding me always in His loving hands :-)
